Deerhoof Back For 2004 With Milkman
After six albums of quirky experimental sounds, Deerhoof return in
2004 with Milkman, which showcases classic rock riffs
alongside the eccentric, noisy adventures they've become known for
since forming in 1994. The San Francisco quartet's seventh album is
due out March 9 on Kill Rock Stars/5 Rue Christine.
With bigger production and fuller arrangements, Milkman is
less raw and live than last year's Apple O, and slightly less
neck-snapping and spastic than 2002's Reveille, yet maintains
Deerhoof's signature: conflict. Is it sweet and innocent or dark and
dying? Childlike and infectious or twisted and destroyed? Deerhoof
don't want you to decide, they want you to wonder. That's part of the
listening experience.
"The songs don't tell you, 'Now you're supposed to feel sad when you
do this part or go crazy in this part,'" Deerhoof co-founder and
drummer Greg Saunier said in an interview with Neumu last year. "Any
part of any song could be the go crazy part ... whatever that means."
Milkman grabs you instantly with the opener and title track's
big, chunky arena riff that gets the air guitar flying before tossing
you into a mess of squealing, riotous noise. With intricate
instrumental interplay, "Giga Dance" builds quietly before bursting
into perfectly-constructed mayhem, while Deerhoof's Spanish-language
debut, "Desaparecer," demonstrates their knack for electronic
experimentation.

Deerhoof will tour the West Coast in support of Milkman
beginning February 23 in Eureka, Calif. before hitting Portland, Ore.
on February 27, Santa Cruz, Calif. on March 5, and wrapping it up
March 7 in San Francisco. The band will play two shows in Tokyo in
mid-March and a set at All Tomorrow's Parties UK April 2. —
