EP Due From The Polyphonic Spree
Continuing to build on the momentum of their debut album, The
Beginning Stages... (Hollywood Records, 2003), Dallas-based
choral-symphonic rock group The Polyphonic Spree will release their
first U.S.-issued EP, titled Light & Day, on Tuesday, Sept. 30.
In addition to a re-recorded version of "Light & Day" (previously
released in the UK), the EP will include "The March" and a Stereolab
remix of "Soldier Girl." This marks the first time any of
these versions have been made available to U.S. audiences in a domestic release.
The Polyphonic Spree are in the middle of an extensive U.S. tour and
it is highly recommended, if they're coming to your city or town,
that you see them while they're still playing small venues. The Beginning
Stages... is an accomplished debut but, according
to band members, it only hints, sonically, at what
this 23-person band is capable of.
Their full-length follow-up, due in early 2004, promises to be a
truer representation of the band's gigantic, melodic, celebratory
sound. "The first record gives you a taste of what we're about to get
into," bandleader Tim DeLaughter explained during an interview
earlier this year. "The next record is a band that's been together
for two and a half years. It kind of realized where it is and where
it's going and what it's about, and we captured it all on tape. It's
a very emotional record. It's extremely dramatic. It has lots of
highs and lows. It's very rewarding at the end. It's full of hope and
it's the most hair-raising musical experience I've done. I'm really,
really happy with it and I can't wait to get it out there."
Finally, if you want a chance to see and hear what this upbeat crew
of robe-wearing, orchestral-anthem-making folks are all about from
the comfort of your own home, you can catch them on NBC's "Late Night
With Conan O'Brien" on November 5, 2003. Jesse Zeifman
