The Book of Lists, a post-punk quartet from Canada, draw their members from Radio
Berlin, the Secret
Three and T.A.L.A. Band. They've been together for less
than a year, and released Red
Arrows, their impressive debut EP, in July.
More
Psychedelic Furs than Bauhaus, the Book of Lists
guitarist/vocalist Chris Frey, bassist/guitarist Laura
Piasta, guitarist Trevor Larson and drummer Brady
Cranfield offer catchy, noisy cuts saturated in
tinny guitar riffs that stretch, vibrate and dominate
like the Jesus & Mary Chain. Vocals leading the EP's
six songs alternate between low, Ian Curtis-style
bellowing and breezy, whispered sneers. Introduced by
chiming guitars, opener "Through Stained Glass"
rings out with both musical and emotional weight, carrying a full, high-pitched
melody
that recalls The
Verve. "Pacifist Revolt" begins with Pink Panther-style
tiptoeing piano before breaking into furious guitar
slashing, then taunting rhythms, behind whispered
sneer-singing. The speedy, pummeling "Sweet Malady"
is all energy, passion and love, while the jangly
closer "Points of Arrival and Departure" features
metallic riffs that seem tickled out of the guitar,
snapping drum beats and a rushed passion that leaves
you wanting more. I'm looking forward to their first album; they just might have
something.
