Finally! The long-awaited solo "joint" from
ex-Hole/Smashin' Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf der Maur!
This is almost as exciting as the release of that James
Iha solo album!!! In all earnestness, I'm rather shocked to report that
this disc is actually pretty decent Auf der Maur plays
the kinda late-'90s alt-rock that Veruca Salt's debut (American Thighs, the one with "Seether") hinted at (too bad this isn't the late
'90s...). This may be due to the fact that many stars
from alt-rock's top echelon play on this CD, including
Screaming Tree Mark Lanegan, two guys from Queens of
the Stone Age (a band that really ought to change its
name to The Overachievers), the aforementioned and
deservedly mocked James Iha, the guy from Hole, etc.
Sadly, Auf der Maur's duet with the singer from
Chokebore, along with a few other songs she wrote with
him, are absent. "Followed the Waves," Auf
der Maur's lead single, is an extremely catchy
song, even though its intro sounds like it was lifted
directly from an early PJ Harvey record. Sure, some of
this material is extremely goofy, but there are some
respectable pics of our heroine in the CD booklet to
beat off to, so I'd say this disc gives the male consumer
his money's worth. Auf der Maur is a sound
value, which is more than one could say for that
Courtney Love solo album.…
