There's something sort of depressing about
Indestructible Object and I can't quite put my
finger on it.... Maybe it has something to do with the
fact that The Giants have rerecorded yet another old
b-side, this time around the tedious throwaway "Ant."
Or maybe it has something to do with the fact that
there's another goddamned song about coffee on this
EP — how many songs about coffee have TMBG written in the
past 22 years anyway?! Too many. Or maybe I'm
still just annoyed about that whole TMBG vs.
McSweeney's tour from a couple o' years back. Perhaps
I'm stating the obvious, but hanging out with Dave
Eggers is probably bad for the soul.... I don't mean to
give The Giants a hard time — I still love them to
death — but I do feel like they have been set on coast
for about 10 years now (and embracing electronic music
in 2001 with Mink Car, a good five years after
electronic music's day had passed, was probably not the
best way to inject some life into the band). And,
sorry, but Flans has no business trying to sing
"Caroline, No" — Brian Wilson would be rolling around in
his piano crate-sized coffin if he were actually dead!
Indestructible Object is good but TMBG can do
better.
