On this second full-length outing, Kathleen Hanna & Co. advertise
"the new sincerity." Not exactly a new product with this pedigree,
but this is the first time Hanna has delivered it musically. That
unholy alliance of punk guitar and drum machine now shows off the
organic contours of "real" band interaction check out how
smoothly they funkify with one another on "Fake French." In their own
bratty way, they slide down the gullet as smooth and professional as
Nickelback. It still sounds like a beer bust, because for them, the
feminist sweepstakes are an invigorating quotidian reality. But
sincerity? Organicity? Professionalism? These are just the
characteristics we associate with indie, right? Yeah right. It's a
miracle Hanna has stayed interesting as long as she has with some
combination of the above. Here's praying, then, that music-making as
a quotidian reality stays invigorating for Hanna another 10 years.
