Jon Spencer's little sis Muffin Spencer and her band have delivered an album that can really only be defined as "cheerleader funk." And I mean that in a good way. Endlessly peppy, in-your-face and competitive, Got It Made's combo of punk-pop guitars, hip-hop grooves and boastful lyrics ("No one/ Can compete/ With the B-R-A-Double S-Y beat!" is pretty typical) is as catchy as Willie Mays. There's a lot of jumpy call and response ("I gotta beef!/ Yeah!/ I gotta beef!/ Yeah!/ I gotta beef with you!") and some great scratching by DJ Swett, though the sheer quantity of self-promoting lyrics grows a bit tiresome over the course of the disc. In doses, though, the drum-and-bass of "No Competition," the glam-rock exercise "Work It Out" and the straight-ahead rockers "You Got It" and "I Gotta Beef" just make you want to jump up out of your seat and yell "Go Team Go!" I've read that Brassy put on a grand live show; if that's the case, this might just be one of the rare discs that actually capture the energy and spirit of a "you have-to-see-them-live" band.
