I've listened hard to the Boredoms' current Hawkwind phase and come
up empty after every listen. Something's clearly not working when a
band calls their most orgasmic moment "Super Going" and not "Super
Coming." Anyway, Hawkwind weren't that great over a full-length to
begin with.... Pronounced Owe-Owe-Eye-Owe-Owe, this all-girl offshoot,
featuring Boredoms singer/drummer/trumpeter Yoshimi P-Wee, fleshes
that sound out a bit. The beat feels like fucking and is surprisingly
quite hooky in and of itself. And the mock-tribal chants up top, one
of which goes "Be Sure to Loop," intensify the hook factor
it's as if the worlds of 1979 post-punk and 1975 kraut rock collided.
Of course, like both their progenitors, OOIOO overstay their welcome
as the album loses steam toward the end (like fucking too, I
suppose). Wouldn't it be grand if all these folks channeled their
prolific spirit into one 10- or 20-minute slab of nirvana on an
annual 12-inch single?
