Wayne Robins' Top Ten Of 2004
1. Franz Ferdinand, Franz Ferdinand (Domino/Epic): A rapturous debut from the first great metrosexual rock band.
2. Brian Wilson, Smile (Nonesuch). If this visionary masterpiece had been released as planned in 1967, some of us would have never come down.
3. Jon Langford, All the Fame of Lofty Deeds (Bloodshot): Loose federation of exceptionally thoughtful songs about America from the master of the Mekons.
4. Dayna Kurtz, Beautiful Yesterdays (Kismet): Skillful writer, gifted interpreter, unforgettable voice.
5. Ollabelle, Ollabelle (DMZ/Columbia): Soulful, downtown-rooted pop-gospel with a pleasantly nondenominational, counterculture vibe.
6. Burning Spear, Creation Rebel: The Original Classic Recordings From Studio One (Heartbeat/Rounder): Spiritual marching music, circa 1969, for a dreadlock army.
7. Chuck Prophet, Age of Miracles (New West): The unclassifiable, thinking-person's rock-blues-rooted singer/songwriter we should all get to know.
8. Holly Golightly, Slowly but Surely (Damaged Goods): Nancy Sinatra released an album this year; it should have sounded like this.
9. Rachel Yamagata, Happenstance (RCA Victor): Hard-pounding, bluesy songs of obsessive love.
10. The Forty-Fives, High Life High Volume (Yep Roc): Modern rock from a band that sounds like it followed The Beatles as the Cavern Club's house band.
Longtime Neumu contributor Wayne Robins is an editor and writer at Billboard magazine.
The InsiderOne Daily Report appears on occasion.
