If you're acquainted with a wacky slice of cable-TV dementia known as "Strangers With Candy" (and it was your cup of wine cooler with a meth chaser), here's more of the same. This unconventional sitcom spawned a movie version reuniting most of the players and rebooting the story of homely, middle-aged ex-junkie-whore-turned-high-school-student Jerri Blank — again played by Amy Sedaris with shameless abandon and not a hint of vanity. Sedaris co-wrote the series and screenplay with fellow cast members Stephen Colbert and Paul Dinello; her eagerness to embrace the grotesque for a laugh goes beyond quirky and into perverse territory. Released from jail after a decades-long sentence, Jerri returns home to find that her remarried father has been comatose for years. She vows to rouse him by restarting her life and enrolling at the high school where she dropped out as a teenage hoodlum. But the cool students shun Jerri, and the teachers are flummoxed by her. Two loser kids befriend her, vowing to show up their tormentors and win the science fair. The cameos by celebrated actors, including Matthew Broderick, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ian Holm, and Sarah Jessica Parker, are gratuitous, because the uniquely hilarious Sedaris makes it all worthwhile. | |||
