After a relatively clever, enticing intro, "Boogeyman" becomes increasingly inane and difficult to tolerate unless you're one for fitful laughter. It's a slight horror movie that its makers surely hoped would evolve into a monstrous franchise like those with Freddy Krueger and Jason. Not likely. The boogeyman of the title is an amorphous, poorly explained thing that lurked in the closet of the film's hero back when he was skittish little shaver. Young Timmy is freaked for good after Dad is snatched away by this creature of the dark. Reaching his 20s, Tim is a lackluster fellow, played with lethargy and fits of distress by Barry Watson (TV's "Seventh Heaven" ). No matter where Tim happens to sack out, he fears what might be under the bed, in the closet, on the shelves, in the bathroom medicine chest, or even in the fridge. This is tough for his loyal girlfriend to take. He should make her happy and forget the past. Yet, when Tim's mentally ill mom (Lucy "Xena" Lawless) dies and he's asked to go back to the now-decrepit haunted house of his childhood, what does he do? He risks his life, not to mention his relationship and what little shred of sanity he has, to stay in the house for one more night. Emily Deschanel (sister of actress Zooey) appears as Tim's childhood sweetie Kate, who is dim enough to visit him right where the Boogeyman is lurking. Poor Kate is instantly endangered — as is Deschanel's career by her participation in "Boogeyman."
