Soaked with whimsy, charm and a child's sense of fun, "The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie," the first full-length feature about the adventures of the mega-popular cartoon hero SpongeBob, works as a treat for the kids, as anyone familiar with the character's TV series might expect. The film, which adds a bit o' 3-D animation and live action to the usual 2-D line work, is also a painless, consistently amusing diversion for grudging adult chaperones and the legion of grown-ups who simply adore the earnest, eternally optimistic, bright-yellow fellow. And it seldom lags during its 90-minute running time. In the underwater town of Bikini Bottom, SpongeBob meets his greatest challenge when Mr. Krabs, his employer at the Krusty Krab (home of the Krabby Patty), opens a second branch of the eatery. Diligent SpongeBob expects to become manager of the new outlet, but Mr. Krabs has other ideas. Meanwhile, teeny-weeny archfiend Plankton takes his ongoing business competition with Krabs to new depths by stealing King Neptune's crown in a devilish, convoluted plot to become ruler of the ocean floor. Yep, the only ones who can recover Neptune's bejeweled headgear are SpongeBob and his best friend Patrick the starfish. As usual, comedian/actor Tom Kenny brings his peerless vocal skills to the lovably goofy voice of SpongeBob. Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson and Jeffrey Tambor provide guest voices. | |||
