With "The Incredibles," writer/director Brad Bird has now made two of the finest feature-length cartoons in the history of the medium. But that does Bird a disservice, because this 3-D computer-animated collaboration with Pixar studio and his previous effort "The Iron Giant" are about as good as movies get — sheer joyous entertainment bursting with stunning visuals, action, humor and genuine feeling. Noble strongman Mr. Incredible (voiced by Craig T. Nelson) is a beloved icon in a world like our own, except for the presence of numerous superheroes. Unfortunately, circumstances have forced him to hide out in his normal identity. He and his wife, the former Elastigirl (a wry, emotive Holly Hunter), are living in the suburbs with their kids Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack when a threat brings Mr. Incredible back into the game and puts his kids' powers into play. "The Incredibles" is more intense than other Pixar films, and more sophisticated in its concerns — the value of family bonds, personal responsibility, and the enduring power of love. Bird's script channels lavish bits from early James Bond movies, the rollicking escapades of Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, and more, as Mr. Incredible takes on his greatest enemy yet: a mid-life crisis. Everything, from score to such perfect supporting characters as frosty man of mystery Frozone (Samuel L. Jackson) and brusque tailor-to-the-heroes Edna Mode (Bird), is brilliant.
