Dickie's ineptitude infuriates his dad, Sen. Judson Pilager, who has pulled strings to facilitate the son's election. But nothing is more threatening to Dickie's candidacy than the discovery of a corpse floating in a scenic lake where a Pilager campaign ad is being filmed. What starts out as sly, well-acted political satire transmutes into a forceful neo-noir detective thriller. Raven hires investigative-journalist-turned-private-eye Danny O'Brien (Danny Huston) to find out if the dead body is a dirty trick by a Pilager enemy. Suspects include a talk-radio host, an environmentalist, and Dickie's rebellious sister Maddy Pilager (Daryl Hannah). With each interview, Danny learns more than would be safe for him to know, yet he continues to seek the truth. Co-starring Tim Roth as Danny's ex-editor; Maria Bello as Danny's lost love; Billy Zane as her new beau, a lobbyist; and Kris Kristofferson as an unscrupulous businessman.
