Bumptious stand-up comic/sitcom star Bernie Mac gets a movie vehicle of his own: the mildly amusing baseball yarn "Mr. 3000." It's not your typical TV-star-to-big-screen case of vehicular manslaughter, such as Ray Romano's awful "Welcome to Mooseport," but it won't live long in anyone's memory either. "Mr. 3000" wisely takes advantage of Mac's scowling, disdainful side by casting him as an arrogant retired ballplayer who gets his comeuppance and faces a very public mid-life crisis. Aging ex-Milwaukee Brewer Stan Ross, AKA Mr. 3000, is pushing to be a member of the Hall of Fame. His prospects are dim due to his disregard of the fans, the sportswriters and most of his former teammates. The Hall is even less likely after Stan learns that his coveted nickname, derived from his career hit total, is a lie. He's traded on that stat since retirement by operating a successful Milwaukee-area shopping center and sports bar under the "Mr. 3000" designation. The revelation that he had only 2997 hits forces him back onto the diamond to try and reclaim his title with three more hits. A Brewers executive (Chris Noth) agrees to reactivate Stan in a ploy to juice ticket sales, angering the current team members. A sportscaster (Angela Bassett) who was Stan's lover is assigned to the story and, of course, stirs up old feelings. The unsurprising "Mr. 3000" is good for a few minor-league laughs. A home run? Not close.
