"She Hate Me," filmmaker Spike Lee's least successful, most embarrassing film, comes right after one of his best, "25th Hour." Oh, snap! With a script that tries to skewer sexual, racial, electoral and office politics, "She Hate Me" is ambitious and pretentious and cringe-inducing, instead of astute and funny. Jack Armstrong (Anthony Mackie), a highly educated black exec at a biotech company, is fired for blowing the whistle on the firm's bogus business practices. Blackballed from other jobs, he learns that the only way he can make a living is by impregnating child-hungry lesbians! Y'see, Jack's ex-fiancée Fatima (Kerry Washington), who left him for another woman, wants a kid. Although her girlfriend balks, Fatima asks Jack to provide the batter for her baby-cake, thinks that other "sisters" would be interested, and offers to broker her stud. In this absurd fantasy, lots of lesbians sign on to get Jack-juice the old fashioned way: coitus. Most of 'em, even the butch ones, get off. Meanwhile, Jack's former employers teeter on the brink of bankruptcy, and blame him. Lee attracts some big-name players: Woody Harrelson and Ellen Barkin as Jack's bosses; Jim Brown and Lonette McKee as Jack's parents; John Turturro and Monica Bellucci as a Mafia don and his dyke daughter; Ossie Davis, Brian Dennehy, and more. But their skills are squandered on "She Hate Me," which deserves scorn, not hate. | |||
