What could have been the sort of wispy movie that evaporates upon viewing is, instead, a poignant, funny dramedy about confronting the responsibilities and perils of adulthood. "Garden State" is even more impressive because it's the first film written and directed by boyish Zach Braff, best known as a cast member on the TV sitcom "Scrubs." It might be beginner's luck, but Braff, who plays the lead in "Garden State," strikes note after resonant character note in his script. And he gets terrific performances out of the other actors, including Peter Sarsgaard and, in her meatiest role since she was a child, willowy Natalie Portman. Andrew (Braff), an over-medicated, struggling actor adrift in Hollywood and working as a waiter, gets word that his mother has died. Having little choice, he goes home to New Jersey after a decade away, attends the funeral and reconnects with estranged family and friends. He must face his emotionally locked-down father (Ian Holm), a psychiatrist, and see how the old gang has fared. Best buddy Max (Sarsgaard), still a stoner, digs graves at the local cemetery. Another pal struck it rich. But Andrew's return to his suburban roots leads to something new and wonderful when he meets a lovely, quirky local girl (Portman). Adding to the film's reflective mood is an evocative folk-rock/chamber-pop soundtrack including songs by Coldplay, Nick Drake, Zero 7, and Simon & Garfunkel. | |||
