You'll never scuba dive again! Or at least, you'll think twice about getting on a charter boat to go diving after you see "Open Water," based on real events. Written and directed by Chris Kentis, this inexpensively financed, scarifying feature is the finny tale of workaholic couple Susan and Daniel a pair of shallow yuppies who get in way too deep during a hastily booked vacation in the tropics. Since Susan (Blanchard Ryan) and Daniel (Daniel Travis) have been getting on each other's nerves at home, an island getaway seems like the ideal tonic. Things improve when they hit the beach and the rum drinks take effect, but their decision to join a group for a scuba-diving excursion turns out to be a very bad one. Due to an oversight during the expedition, the couple is abandoned in shark-infested waters, where they float and wait to be rescued. Their ordeal, which is impacted by good and bad aspects of their life together, plays out over the course of "Open Water." Made in the Bahamas and shot in the ocean with real sharks and without special effects or computer-generated creatures, the film has a "National Geographic"-special look that brings a sense of verity to the horror. If you're nostalgic about the "Jaws" movies (even the hysterical "Jaws 3-D"), "Open Water" will be a like a bucket of seawater to the face. You won't want to drink it up, but you'll definitely drink it in. | |||
