The low-budget, gay-themed romantic comedy "Touch of Pink" is so puppy-eager to be loved (like its hero) that it seems mean to react with anything less than enthusiasm. It sends its harmless message of tolerance with enough professionalism to merit respect. But it's little more than a stretched-out vignette, with a fantasy gimmick reinforcing the title's echo of the fizzy Cary Grant-Doris Day film "That Touch of Mink." Alim, a cute, repressed gay guy from a materialistic Muslim family in Toronto, is the central character in "Touch of Pink." Closeted to his family, Alim moved to London to escape his overbearing mother. He still wrestles with his identity and low self-esteem, although he's now in a loving relationship with free-spirited fellow traveler Giles. To help overcome his timidity, Alim turns to the old movies he adores and conjures up an imaginary friend: the spirit of Cary Grant. Suave, handsome, witty and capable in any situation, Grant is like a ghostly life coach. All is calm until Alim's mother comes to London to invite her reticent son back home for his golden-boy cousin's wedding and secrets are blown. Lovable Jimi Mistry ("The Guru") as Alim and genial Kristen Holden-Reid as Giles are easy to cheer on. Jaunty Kyle MacLachlan ("Twin Peaks") plays Grant's specter with verve. It's just that writer/director Ian Iqbal Rashid's "Touch" is a little too light. | |||
