In 1996, Richard Linklater, Texas-born director of smart, tart, youth-oriented films ("Dazed and Confused"), traveled to Europe to make the magical, conversational "Before Sunrise" with scruffy American actor Ethan Hawke and willowy French actress Julie Delpy. "Before Sunrise" eavesdropped on Jesse (Hawke) and Celine (Delpy), two garrulous young people, as they met on a train to Vienna. Strolling the city and speaking their hearts and minds, they swiftly fell in love. He had to leave for the U.S. in the morning, but they swore to meet again in six months. Linklater's "Before Sunset," which he co-wrote with Hawke and Delpy, revisits the couple nine years after the events of "Before Sunrise." Jesse is now an author on a European tour to promote his new novel. Celine, residing in Paris, learns Jesse is doing a reading at a local bookstore, and she surprises him by showing up. That night, he'll be New York-bound, so they have an hour and a half to walk through the streets of Paris, sit in a café, ride a boat on the Seine, and speak thoughtfully, wistfully and passionately about their lives, philosophies, missed opportunities, and their precious evening in Vienna. The palpable chemistry between Hawke and Delpy invigorates this unconventional love story. It's a captivating, emotionally honest movie that gently flows in real time … and begs for another sequel. | |||
