Sheer magic is "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban," the third fanciful adventure film based on author J.K. Rowling's popular book series. Though interested viewers should see the previous installments, this is the best so far. Part of the improvement is due to the growing skill of the young actors who play the troika of friends enrolled at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry: Daniel Radcliffe as 13-year-old magus-in-training Harry, Emma Watson as plucky junior witch Hermione, and Rupert Grint as loyal, clumsy would-be wizard Ron. The rest of the accolades go to director Alfonso Cuarón. Praised for helming the sexy, humorous drama "Y Tu Mamá También," Cuarón seems like an odd choice for the Potter franchise, but his résumé includes a revision of Dickens' "Great Expectations" and the family favorite "A Little Princess." In "Prisoner of Azkaban," Harry copes with an escaped con (Gary Oldman) implicated in the death of his parents; faces the demonic Dementors; tames a mythic creature called a "hippogriff"; endures taxing studies with a new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher (David Thewlis); and grapples with the onslaught of adolescence. The script is tight, the special effects are magnificent, the superb returning cast is enhanced by additions such as Emma Thompson, and Cuarón doesn't waste a shot or fumble a moment.
