"My Big Fat Greek Wedding," the modest film debut of actress/writer Nia Vardalos, became a box-office sensation. This glorified sitcom expanded on a one-woman stage show drawn from Vardalos' experiences growing up in a noisy Greek immigrant family. Her follow-up, "Connie and Carla," is an antic comedy probably drawn from her experiences watching "Some Like It Hot" and "Victor/Victoria." Aided by costar Toni Collette, Vardalos gives a twist to the "Some Like It Hot" plot, wherein two musicians witness a murder, are spotted by the perps, and are forced to go on the run in female disguise. Lifelong friends and would-be stars Connie (Vardalos) and Carla (Collette) are resigned to singing and dancing for bored wayfarers in a Chicago airport lounge — until they see their employer get whacked. With the miscreants in pursuit, Connie and Carla take their act on the road, all the way to West Hollywood. That's where the "Victor/Victoria" girl-as-guy-as-girl gender-bend comes in: To go undercover, C. & C. dress as drag queens, audition at a gay bar, and become a cabaret sensation. They're not much more feminine than the unreal thing, but David Duchovny as a hetero fella is attracted to the supposedly male Connie. This paean to tolerance, show tunes and fabulousness could've been abominable. Instead, it's corny, tolerable frivolity.
