Starting with its tongue-in-cheek title, the opulent, intriguing ensemble film "Bon Voyage" is infused with continental drollery that marks it as different from most World War II period pieces. The seriocomic tone of the script and calculatedly grandiose performances by French superstars Gérard Depardieu and Isabelle Adjani lend an unexpected lilt to a story with so many tragic implications. In "Bon Voyage," an old physicist (Jean-Marc Stehle) and his lovely young assistant (Virginie Ledoyen) are desperately trying to get out of Nazi-occupied France with materials that are valuable to the Allied war effort. They leave Paris and head south as part of a mass exodus of citizens hoping to escape the invading German army. Struggling writer Frédéric (Grégori Derangère) and self-centered movie actress Viviane (Adjani) are also on the run, although traveling separately. Frédéric has been hopelessly in love with Viviane since they were childhood neighbors, leading him to do most anything on her behalf. But Viviane isn't interested in Frédéric when she can convince egotistical cabinet minister Beaufort (Depardieu) to protect her from the Nazi menace. Everyone reaches the port city of Bordeaux, where the French government has fled. But it will be tenuous sanctuary for all, be they upright or morally bankrupt. With Yvan Attal and Peter Coyote.
