Guess what will happen if you choose to see the insubstantial, youth-oriented romantic comedy "Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!"? You'll lose 96 precious minutes of your life! This isn't a bad thing when a film is diverting enough to free you from daily concerns. But "Win a Date With Tad Hamilton!" leaves a void in its wake. Rosalee, a wholesomely pretty small-town girl played by the stunning Kate Bosworth ("Blue Crush"), wins a contest that sends her on a promotional date with Tad (Josh Duhamel), a crass Hollywood hunk trying to burnish his image. But Tad is so impressed with her sweet decency that he shows up at the West Virginia supermarket where she works as a cashier, and woos her to the chagrin of her co-worker and lifelong friend Pete, who secretly adores her. The inevitable love triangle finds Rosalee torn between Glamour Boy and the earnest affections of Mr. Ordinary. As Pete, Topher Grace (TV's "That '70s Show") has a dry, witty way of underplaying that would thrive with a decent script. He and Bosworth are better than the material. So are Nathan Lane and Sean Hayes as Tad's agent and manager and Ginnifer Goodwin as Rosalee's ditzy pal. While the film isn't stupid, it's as shallow as Tad. It needed to be funnier and more emotionally satisfying, and the logy direction of Robert Luketic ("Legally Blonde") did it no favors. | |||
