For all of the acting and comedic talent on screen and the skills of British screenwriter Richard Curtis ("Notting Hill"), "Love Actually" is nowhere near the holiday prize package it's intended to be. At 135 minutes, this Christmas-themed, London-based production is mighty cumbersome for a romantic comedy. Curtis, in his first shot at directing a movie, interweaves too many characters and storylines, and shortchanges them all. Some of the elements seem contrived or gratuitous, but the whole package is so optimistic and well-meaning that it's hard to be very critical. Droll, delightful moments do pop up, and the cast is premium. Hugh Grant is a bachelor Prime Minister attracted to an aide. Alan Rickman is considering an affair with his secretary, despite the consequences of cheating on his upright wife (Emma Thompson). Liam Neeson is a just-widowed stepfather trying to bond with his late wife's son. Colin Firth is a cuckolded writer who moves to a house in Provence, where he falls for his Portuguese maid. Bill Nighy, funniest of all, is an over-the-hill rocker trying to revive his career with a Christmas novelty tune. And there's more, when less would have worked better. With Laura Linney, Rowan Atkinson and a few surprise cameos. | |||
