Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington ("Training Day") and dexterous director Carl Franklin ("One False Move") share a history. In 1995, they teamed for the shrewd '50s detective thriller "Devil in a Blue Dress." If their second collaboration, "Out of Time," isn't quite as satisfying as their first, it works as a polished, contemporary spin on film noir. Matt (Washington) is a well-respected chief of police in a small Florida Keys town. He's no cookie-cutter good-guy, though. He's estranged from his wife (Eva Mendes), a Miami police detective, and he's conflicted. Looking for some sexual healing, Matt takes up with his high school sweetheart Anne Merai (Sanaa Lathan), now married to abusive ex-football player Chris (Dean Cain). But Matt learns that Anne Merai's personal problems go beyond marital strife. The situation becomes more volatile when evidence of a double homicide points to Matt, who must solve the crime to clear his name. With its hot, humid locale, body heat from the cast, crisp dialogue, hairpin plot turns and steamy Latin-jazz score, "Out of Time" delivers suspense until it succumbs to a pat ending. John Billingsley provides first-rate comic relief as Matt's best friend, a medical examiner. | |||
