Wide-ranging British director Michael Winterbottom ("24 Hour Party People," "Welcome to Sarajevo," "Jude") makes drama look like documentary with "In This World" — a phenomenal film about the odyssey of two Afghan refugees trying to make it, without visas or legal papers, from Pakistan to London. Jamal (Jamal Udin Torabi), a 16-year-old orphan, lives in a refugee camp in Pakistan; his older cousin Enayat (Enayatullah) lives and works in nearby Peshawar. Their family wants to send Enayat to London where he'll have the opportunity to lead a better, more prosperous life. But Enayat doesn't speak English, and Jamal does. Since the family deems that Jamal would be an indispensable asset on Enayat's journey, enough money is found to pay for two travelers to be smuggled by the clandestine network of people traffickers. There isn't enough cash for airfare, so Enayat and Jamal have to travel overland. It's a treacherous route with anticipated and unexpected obstacles -- political, meteorological, logistical and financial. And there's the human factor, as people along the way try to impose their will on the pilgrims. "In This World" was written by Tony Grisoni, even if seems like fate had a hand in it.
