Certified chills enhanced by artful visual flair set "The Eye" apart from the usual ho-hum horror film. Made by the Thai brother team of Oxide and Danny Pang, "The Eye" focuses on a blind Chinese girl after her successful receipt of transplanted corneas. But whatever joy Mun (Lee Sin-Je) experiences over the medical miracle of restored vision turns to shock and fear. The operation has unlocked a shadow world populated by ghostly harbingers of death that only Mun can see. When her surgeon and her family dismiss her visions as mental manifestations, she's sent to a psychotherapist (Lawrence Chou) whose interest in her goes beyond the professional and toward the romantic. Mun begins to question the source of the corneas, thinking that knowledge of the donor could help to explain her episodes. Her pursuit of that confidential information brings her face to face with a disaster of immense magnitude. Because the Pangs take time to set up a realistic recovery situation with eye-surgeon follow-ups and counseling, there's a sense of realness that makes the fantasy aspects of "The Eye" more vivid. It's more disquieting than scary. It's also a panoply of mesmerizing, surreal imagery.
