In "Holes," an unlucky, wrong-place-wrong-time boy ends up as an inmate at a desolate desert camp — the sun-fried equivalent of juvenile hall. Anyone unfamiliar with the book can now go see the amusing, pungent, fairly inspirational film version of "Holes," scripted by Sachar. Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf), whose family has long been cursed with ill fortune, is wrongly accused of a theft. Sent to Camp Green Lake, Stanley and his ragtag fellow "campers" are forced to dig holes by the sinister warden (Sigourney Weaver) and her henchmen (Jon Voight, Tim Blake Nelson). The warden says the excavation is a character-builder. But Stanley begins to suspect that she's actually looking for something special buried in the area. The mystery of "Holes," revealed in flashback, involves the Yelnats curse and a notorious female bandit (Patricia Arquette) of the Old West. "Holes" has a brutal tinge, but director Andrew Davis ("The Fugitive") doesn't shy away from its darker elements, and the younger cast members are as impressive as their elders.
