Romantic comedies should be brisk and breezy. "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" slogs along with only its charming leads to keep it from being stillborn. Adorable Kate Hudson showed such promise in "Almost Famous," sending her star on the rise; hunky Matthew McConaughey showed such promise in "EDtv," hinting at his worth as a leading man. But whoever decided to pair them in the dippy "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" didn't reckon with a deficit in their screen chemistry. Hudson, who beams with giggly sweetness that must be a genetic gift from her mother, Goldie Hawn, plays Andie, a brainy writer for a New York-based women's mag. Andie's frustration with superficial assignments increases when her editor (Bebe Neuwirth) demands a piece about female behavior that will ruin a relationship with a man. Research requires that Andie entice a guy, then drive him away... in 10 days. Meanwhile, to win a big account, ad man Benjamin (McConaughey) bets his boss that he can get a woman to fall in love with him... in 10 days. The stage is set for a bogus, antagonistic "When Benjy Meets Andie," happy ending assured. | |||
