A new semester begins at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft & Wizardry as the immaculately designed, special-effects-laden, all-ages fantasy "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" gets rolling. Based on the second novel in author J.K. Rowling's best-selling series, it picks up where "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone," the first book and the 2001 film adaptation, left off. At 161 minutes, "Chamber of Secrets" runs long, but improves on the enjoyable debut installment. Student wizard Harry, again played with the right mix of wonder, naïveté and resolve by Daniel Radcliffe, is up to his specs in intrigue. Something evil is stalking the school and paralyzing the unwary; Harry and friends Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) must vanquish the unknown foe. Making matters worse, the cruel spell-casting father (Jason Isaacs) of Harry's rival Draco Malfoy, demands that sage Hogwarts headmaster Dumbledore (Richard Harris) resign. As pompous Professor Gilderoy Lockhart, Kenneth Branagh is a shining addition to a peerless cast of Potter regulars that includes Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Alan Rickman and John Cleese. | |||
