A thoughtful, painful, low-key portrait of two brothers and a father in rural Nebraska as they come to grips with the past and with the notion of accepting responsibility. The head of the Coates family has struggled to keep his farm running and his boys on the right path since losing his wife years ago. Now, he's unexpectedly facing foreclosure on his property, and he's reluctant to tell his sons Tully (Anson Mount) and Earl (Glenn Fitzgerald) about the crisis. Young men on the cusp of adulthood, Tully and Earl work the land with their dad — in Tully's case, grudgingly. A small-town swain who has his way with the local girls, Tully is torn between the easy babe working as an exotic dancer in a nearby dive, and Earl's best friend, Ella (Julianne Nicholson), a wholesome, guileless young woman studying to be a veterinarian. When Tully and Earl finally confront the truth about their mother and her fate, their lives become far more complex. Although "Tully" sometimes moves at the pace of an old plow-horse and is encumbered by one too-obvious moment, it merits praise for its performances and emotional content.
