The sex is graphic and Lucía is confused throughout most of "Sex and Lucía," Spanish director Julio Medem's strangely convoluted psychological drama that flashes back, forward and every which way. Although it starts out passionate and playful, the relationship between Lucía (Paz Vega) and her lover Lorenzo (Tristan Ulloa) is strained. Things go from bad to life-altering when Lorenzo, a struggling novelist who has become increasingly distant, is involved in an accident that sends Lucía on an odyssey of discovery. Searching for clues about Lorenzo's problems, she winds up at a beach house by the Mediterranean. There Lorenzo's past catches up to Lucía, as she learns some things about him that he would never tell her and other things about him that he himself never knew. The film's final convergence of lifelines is too much, but the actors' zeal and the cinematography, stark and bright by the sea and saturated with warmth during the torrid lovemaking sequences, are worth noting.
