Thomas Riedelsheimer Andy Goldsworthy 2002 |
Outstanding documentary about the phenomenal Scottish artist Andy Goldsworthy, who works as a sculptor in the ephemeral/eternal medium of nature. With an uncanny eye for form and function in the most rugged or barren landscape, Goldsworthy builds beautiful, usually perishable installations whose very evanescence adds a profound dimension to every piece he creates. He uses materials such as stones, leaves, ice, twigs and sticks in settings that range from Arctic wastes to sylvan New England glades to the creeks near his own rural home. The astonishing results are nothing less than visual, environmental poetry. "Rivers and Tides" is so perfectly, lovingly shot by German filmmaker Thomas Riedelsheimer that its own artfulness is cause for acclaim. A score by British avant-garde musician Fred Firth adds to the magical quality of a movie that serves as both confirmation and celebration of Goldsworthy's unique vision, the luster of his labors and the transitory fruit of those undertakings. | |||
