The Powerpuff Girls — resourceful Blossom, naïve Bubbles and no-nonsense Buttercup — are pint-sized cartoon super-heroines whose popular, kid-friendly TV series is an unbeatable concoction of pixie charm and feisty attitude. A feature film was inevitable, and it rocks! Like the show, its simple, geometric character designs echo anime pioneer Osamu Tezuka's "Astro Boy," its pastel-colored backgrounds recall '50s-futura style, and it's written with a smart, satirical edge that grownups can enjoy. Each TV episode, recounting the Girls' adventures as they defend the city of Townsville from a parade of grotesque villains, is so bright and concise that there was the danger of a full-length movie coming off as padded. But PPG creator Craig McCracken and crew went for a neat, self-contained origin story: The Girls are spawned in the lab by caring father-figure Professor Utonium, and they have their first battle with arch-nemesis/mutated monkey megalomaniac Mojo Jojo. If you love the Girls, this'll fortify the feeling.
