Sexual desire and betrayal push the plot of "Unfaithful," which features the latest in actor Richard Gere's gallery of husbands and lovers involved in or undone by risky boudoir antics. This time, Gere's character is married to the attractive but yearning mother of his excruciatingly cute son. Mom is played by Diane Lane, cast as a similarly wayward wife in the '60s nostalgia piece "A Walk on the Moon." In "Unfaithful," she's fabulous as a more contemporary woman, one just bored enough with her life in the 'burbs of New York's metropolitan area to embrace an illicit affair in Soho with a younger man a sensual, arrogant French book dealer played by Olivier Martinez. Gere would have been the seducer earlier in his career; he's now the crazed cuckold. And things seldom go well in Adultery Land. As usual, director Adrian Lyne ("Fatal Attraction") handles the erotic scenes with aplomb, but style triumphs over substance, and, for something so lurid, "Unfaithful" is slow going. | |||
