A lovely weave of engaging personalities and bittersweet travails marks "Son of the Bride," the 2001 Argentinean nominee for the best foreign film Oscar. It's as barbed as a spirit-lifting movie could be, but the pain you'll feel is a good, empathic pain. Overworked restaurateur Rafael (Ricardo Darin) is heading for burnout. Besides the usual pressures of his job, he's fending off overtures from a company that wants to buy the popular eatery his father, Nino (Hector Alterio), started many years ago. At the end of the day, he's too tired to satisfy his beautiful young girlfriend, and he's virtually ignoring his daughter, jeopardizing the joint custody arrangement he has with his ex-wife. Plus, his mother, Norma (Norma Aleandro), is suffering from Alzheimer's disease. When Nino convinces Rafael to visit Norma at the nursing home, the son decides to give his parents the ultimate present the church wedding Mom always wanted and never had. But the preparations just add to Rafael's stress. | |||
