Based on the 1975 B-flick jumble of blood sports, social commentary and bleak sci-fi, the remake of "Rollerball" is a complete and utter mess, with incomprehensible elements and gaping gorges in logic. It's hard to believe that the new version was brought to rotten fruition by a fairly accomplished action-movie director, John McTiernan ("Die Hard"). In the not-too-distant future, Rollerball — a dangerous combination of roller derby, motocross, ice hockey and basketball — is gaining worldwide favor on television, even though it's only played in lawless countries such as former Soviet states. When more violence in the game results in higher ratings (big surprise), the sport's chieftains secretly begin sacrificing players for a larger share of the viewing audience. Even clean-cut Jonathan (Chris Klein of "American Pie") is expendable when his team's owner (Jean Reno) decides that the star athlete knows too much. Also on the team: LL Cool J as Jon's best bud and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos as Jon's lover.
