The Royal Tenenbaums | ||||

Prickly, invigorating and mordantly funny glimpse into the doings of an unconventional family. A contentious husband and wife (Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston), now divorced, produced three prodigies who, though wildly successful in adolescence, are aging, veering toward has-beendom and returning to the nest. At the same time, the long-absent Tenenbaum dad tries to insinuate himself back into the lives of his offspring. As the Tenenbaum kids in the nadir of young adulthood, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller and Luke Wilson hit the spot. Owen Wilson, Luke's brother, plays the Tenenbaum siblings' now-grown-up childhood friend, a self-destructive rebel who has achieved acclaim as an author; he also co-wrote the script with director Wes Anderson. With a roster of oddballs reminiscent of the madcap relations in the classic play "You Can't Take It With You" and a pointed script infused with the clever, zany, tragicomic snap of the authors' previous collaboration, "Rushmore," this is no royal pain. | |||
