Obvious comparisons to the feel-good populism of classic filmmaker Frank Capra aside, "The Majestic" is a maudlin throwback in its patriotic, optimistic theme and its melodramatic take on the U.S. government's Communist witch-hunts of the '50s. Jim Carrey ("Me, Myself & Irene"), out of rubber-faced funnyman mode and in serious thespian mode, is a disenchanted Hollywood screenwriter accused of Commie sympathies. His thriving career jeopardized, he gets drunk, drives up the coast and has an auto accident that leaves him with amnesia. Found by a kindly citizen from a nearby community, the screenwriter is identified by the Samaritan as a local hero who disappeared in combat during World War II. The nice-guy amnesiac is embraced by the missing soldier's father (Martin Landau), sweetheart (Laurie Holden) and friends and decides to help his "dad" reopen the town's shuttered cinema. It's candy corn, without a concession stand, from director Frank Darabont ("The Green Mile").
