rating rating cinematronic
For all of its cultural resonance, the Woodstock rock festival in 1969 was behind the curve, inculcating an army of weekend hippies. Far ahead of the curve was the first great gathering of the rock tribes, 1967's Monterey International Pop Festival, held in California during the Summer of Love, when psychedelica was an underground movement in first flower. This was the concert that spawned the legends of Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding and Janis Joplin, and featured eminent sets from The Who, Ravi Shankar and others. Fortuitously, Monterey Pop was captured in vigorous, cinema verité style by director D.A. Pennebaker, whose "Don't Look Back," the film of Bob Dylan's groundbreaking British tour, was a watershed in music documentaries. This incredible three-DVD set includes the original "Monterey Pop" theatrical release, digitally restored, Pennebaker's shorts "Jimi Plays Monterey" and "Shake! Otis at Monterey," and the big bonus, a two-hour collection of most every performance (Simon & Garfunkel, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, the Mamas and the Papas, Laura Nyro, etc.) filmed by Pennebaker's crew.
