Uh-oh. Enormous mutated spiders attack a desert community in the Southwest. What starts off slow and then begins to shout "Danger! Hokum ahead!" is actually a funny, diabolically (pardon the word) creepy send-up of Atom Age monster movies such as "The Giant Mantis" and "Them." There are minor continuity glitches when the plethora of arachnids is first transformed by a toxic chemical spill. No problem. As soon as the vicious, growing horde hits the streets of the nearby mining town (and the tunnels below) and begins terrorizing the residents, the fun begins. As the prodigal son returning home in time to battle giant spiders, David Arquette of the "Scream" movies brings the right goofy energy to the inanity. Kari Wuhrer is the sexy local sheriff/single mom coveted by Arquette's character. Her kids are a sullen teenage girl (Scarlett Johansson) and a pubescent science geek (Scott Terra) who knows spiders. But the comedy MVPs are Doug E. Doug as a conspiracy freak and Rick Overton as a dimwit deputy. | |||
