Britney Spears shows that she has a measure of acting skill and camera-ready charisma in her first starring role. Then a hack script drags her down. Valedictorian at her high school in a small Southern town, wholesome but hot-looking virgin Lucy (Spears) wants to pursue music studies, but her garage-mechanic dad (Dan Aykroyd) wants her to seek a career in medicine. Meanwhile, circumstances reunite her with her estranged childhood friends, social butterfly Kit (Zoe Saldana) and punky, pregnant outcast Mimi (Taryn Manning). Kit wants to check in with her undergrad fiancé in L.A.; Mimi wants to participate in a Hollywood talent contest; Lucy wants to reconnect with her mother (Kim Cattrall) who moved to Arizona when Lucy was a toddler. So the girls hitch a ride west with Mimi's hunky chum Ben (Anson Mount). Voila! Road movie! Prepare to roll your eyes when you see what happens and see Brit sing her hit "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman." Not yet a film star either, kid. Dig up a better role. | |||
