A refreshingly different animated film from Richard Linklater, the director responsible for the laconic, funny "Slacker," the similarly droll, '70s-themed "Dazed and Confused" and the tender, eloquent Euro-romance "Before Sunrise." Like "Slacker" and "Dazed...," Linklater's latest is a talky ensemble movie. But "Waking Life" — a stream of philosophical reflections on the nature of existence and consciousness, flowing with wry humor and piquant music — is no retread. Linklater took digital video of his loquacious subjects as they pontificated and had a crew of animators give the footage a surreal twist using various computer programs. Those whose digital renditions parade through a colorful landscape include actors from earlier Linklater films: i.e. Wiley Wiggins ("Dazed and Confused") as an Everyguy whose dreams and ruminations put him into contact with a cross-section of thinkers, and Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke ("Before Sunrise") as lovers in a bedroom debate.
