A refreshingly different animated film from Richard Linklater, the director responsible for the laconic, funny "Slacker," the similarly droll, '70s-themed "Dazed and Confused" and the tender, eloquent Euro-romance "Before Sunrise." Like "Slacker" and "Dazed...," Linklater's latest is a talky ensemble movie. But "Waking Life" a stream of philosophical reflections on the nature of existence and consciousness, flowing with wry humor and piquant music is no retread. Linklater took digital video of his loquacious subjects as they pontificated and had a crew of animators give the footage a surreal twist using various computer programs. Those whose digital renditions parade through a colorful landscape include actors from earlier Linklater films: i.e. Wiley Wiggins ("Dazed and Confused") as an Everyguy whose dreams and ruminations put him into contact with a cross-section of thinkers, and Julie Delpy and Ethan Hawke ("Before Sunrise") as lovers in a bedroom debate. Truly unusual. | |||
