Hopeful romantics! Softhearted wimps! Here's a bon-bon for you. If you suspend disbelief, it's a dandy date movie a gently comic hand-holder that, despite the modern-hipster charm of male lead John Cusack, seems to have been made in and for another time. Cusack plays Jon, a glib, eager young man who has a chance meeting with an attractive young woman named Sara when they both attempt to buy the same pair of gloves at a Manhattan department store during Christmas season. Instantly enamored, they spend the rest of the day together, despite being involved with other people. Jon wants to stay in touch; Sara, played by coltish British actress Kate Beckinsale, wants to leave their reunion to chance. Bye-bye, love. Years later, he's about to marry his beautiful girlfriend in New York; she's engaged to a new-agey Marin County musician. Separated by a continent, both Jon and Sara feel that something isn't quite right and decide to take action. Like a less whiny Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan film. | |||
