Kevin Spacey again proves himself to be one of the premier actors of his generation by bringing substance to a holy-fool-in-a-mental-hospital movie that could have been total treacle in other hands. It's still no great shakes, especially when compared to "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," the landmark loony-bin drama about madness, incarceration and the liberation of the spirit. But there's a distinct sci-fi flavor to "K-PAX" that sets it apart, and Spacey is never less than an imposing presence. He plays a fellow who pops up in a crowded New York City train station, calls himself Prot and claims to be a visitor from planet K-PAX. With that tale and no I.D., Prot, an otherwise normal, amiable man, gets a one-way ticket to the psycho ward. There, he's examined by Dr. Mark Powell (Jeff Bridges), a well-meaning skeptic. Powell is amazed by the intellectual feats of the stranger, whose true nature is a mystery. What's not a mystery is the notion that Prot will change the lives of everyone in the hospital. | |||
