Denzel Washington sizzles as Los Angeles narcotics detective Alonzo Harris, the king bastard of all cops, in a harsh crime drama that works hard and comes up a bit short. Alonzo is a treacherous fellow whose code of honor is a mutable thing residing in a gray area of no moral certitude. His foil is Ethan Hawke as Jake, an eager LAPD rookie assigned to "audition" for the rogue division Alonzo rules like it's a street gang. With Jake in tow, Alonzo motors from barrio to ghetto, consorting with lowlifes, threatening stoolies, bending the law and even breaking it in the name of busting drug dealers. Not only is Alonzo pushing the envelope, he's pushing Jake. It's clear that the veteran is testing the novice, but what's not so clear is Alonzo's true agenda. In its last half-hour, the movie loses its way, culminating in an increasingly implausible face-off made possible by a coincidence that's all too convenient. But Washington carries the load. He's a one-man riot squad. You can't take your eyes off him.
