Teenage angst in suburbia, monsters from the subconscious (or other dimensions), time travel and the end of the world are the grandiose components at the core of "Donnie Darko," an intriguing, sometimes frustrating drama with fantasy overtones. There are some very seductive images and unexpected plot twists in the movie, which is well sold by an able cast. Jake Gyllenhaal ("October Sky") is Donnie, a smart, emotionally disturbed high-school student whose dark visions commandeer his life. After a near-death experience, Donnie sees the conventional world begin to warp and distort around him with greater frequency. His actions are increasingly dictated by a strange creature that appears to him at crucial moments and inspires him to dubious acts. With Jena Malone as Donnie's confidante, the new girl in town; Katherine Ross as Donnie's therapist; Noah Wyle and Drew Barrymore as two sympathetic teachers at the high school; and Patrick Swayze as an unctuous motivational speaker.
