Tapping into the tension, bleakness and corruption that characterize prime, gut-churning film noir, director John Dahl grabbed rightful attention with his accomplished low-budget thrillers "Red Rock West" and "The Last Seduction." He does as well with a genre film of another stripe: terror. A clean-cut college boy (Paul Walker) and his ne'er-do-well older brother (Steve Zahn) are driving home on a cross-country route that will allow them to offer a ride to a family friend — a cute coed (Leelee Sobieski). But before they pick up the girl, the brothers use their CB radio to pull a nasty prank on a truck driver. The trick backfires, violently. As a result, the revenge-minded trucker is in hot pursuit of the tricksters. Unaware of the danger, the girl joins the journey, only to become more prey in a deadly game of highway cat-and-mouse. There are echoes of Steven Spielberg's movie "Duel" in the road-rage scenario and the chase by a demon in a tractor-trailer. That doesn't diminish the thrill of Dahl's excursion. | |||
