Writer/director Kevin Smith's mix of intelligent and crude humor has been a hallmark of his films "Clerks," "Mallrats," "Chasing Amy" and "Dogma," all of which have featured best buds Jay and Silent Bob — archetypal stoners played, respectively, by the babbling Jason Mewes and the taciturn Smith. Delivered in varying doses from movie to movie, they functioned as a moronic Greek chorus when they weren't advancing a plot with ganja-fueled buffoonery. For the fifth and (reportedly) final film with the duo, they're at center stage on a quest to profit off or undermine a Hollywood movie based on comic book characters they inspired. It's peppered by more show-biz in-jokes than a Friars' Club roast. But it may require familiarity with Smith's projects for full appreciation, since he convinced actors from the other films — Jason Lee, Ben Affleck, Chris Rock, George Carlin, etc. — to reprise roles or make cameo appearances. With Will Ferrell, Shannon Elizabeth, Matt Damon, Mark Hamill and lots of extra treats.
